Community Engagement Outcomes
During July and August 2022 Council engaged the Community on a Draft Animal Management Plan. Council received 113 responses and as a result of Community feedback a number of amendments were made to the plan prior to it being recommended to Council for endorsement.
On 5 September 2022 Council endorsed the Animal Management Plan 2022 - 2026 and approved it being submitted to the Dog and Cat Management Board.
The Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 requires all Councils to have an Animal Management Plan.
The Animal Management Plan provides guidance to Council and the public regarding day to day animal management arrangements and future decision making in respect to dogs and cats within the Council area.
The key objectives of the Plan are to:
Increase public safety so people and pets can integrate safely and harmoniously within the community
Create an environment that encourages responsible pet ownership
Recognise that companion animals are part of the community and contribute towards the overall quality of life
Reduce public and environmental nuisances from dogs and cats
Ensure Council delivers effective, efficient dog and cat management services.
The Plan contains current arrangements for dogs and cats including:
Background information and statistics
Dog management arrangements
Cat management arrangements
Objectives, Strategies and Key Performance Indicators for Microchipping, Desexing, Cat Management, and Responsible Dog and Cat Ownership.
In accordance with legislation, the Animal Management Plan contains provisions for parks where dogs may be exercised off-leash and on-leash as well as locations where dogs are prohibited.
Key changes in this review of the previous plan included:
An update to the Objectives, Strategies and Key Performance Indicators
Expansion of the information about Cat Management
Commentary regarding Council’s continued exploration as to whether a second dog park is required
A change to reflect that Wadmore Park/Pulyonna Wirra is transitioning to be an on-leash area
A desire to increase educational opportunities in respect to responsible animal management.
