Background:

Council is undertaking a masterplan for Foxfield Oval Reserve. In Stage 1 of the consultation process, Council is interested in hearing from local residents, users and hirers, to understand how the site could best meet their needs. Dash Architects will use this information to develop a draft masterplan for Stage 2 consultation with the broader Community.

Foxfield Oval Reserve is located at Maryvale Road Athelstone, set amongst large gum trees and adjacent to Fifth Creek and Wadmore Park/Pulyonna Wirra. The facilities within Foxfield Oval Reserve include:

  • A play space
  • Two public tennis courts (with basketball hoops and occasionally used for learn to ride)
  • An oval (used for formal and informal sports, dog walking and special events)
  • Public toilets
  • The Athelstone Scout Hall
  • Foxfield Oval Hall (available for hire by members of the public)
  • A recently constructed change room facility with public toilets (available for use by oval hirers).
  • Picnic facilities
  • Connections to walking trails at Black Hill Conservation Park, Wadmore Park/Pulyonna Wirra and the Fifth Creek Trail
  • Some off-street car parking as well as on-street parking adjacent to the site.

Foxfield Oval is a popular site for off leash dog walking, and is used as an overflow weekend facility for Athelstone Football Club and Athelstone Cricket Club who have their club rooms at the nearby Max Amber Sportsfield Reserve. Foxfield Oval Hall has been the home of Athelstone Table Tennis Club for some 60 years, and is also used by a private boxing gym hirer and for other Community hire opportunities (e.g. children’s parties, quiz nights). A number of events are held at Foxfield Oval Reserve throughout the year including Tour Down Under, Car Shows, school sports days and the Black Hill Challenge.

The following facilities at the site are not within the scope of the project:

  • Tennis Courts upgrade (Council has recently committed to funding for this project) and the location of the courts
  • The recently constructed change room facilities
  • The Athelstone Scout Hall (Council has recently committed to funding to improve accessibility within the building).

What’s being proposed:

Council is interested in hearing from local residents and key user groups about their ideas to further improve the site. Considerations include, but are not limited to:

  • Buildings and facilities improvements
  • Playground location and improvements
  • The future configuration of the tennis courts - Council anticipates that one court will be retained for tennis, whilst the other could be a multi-court providing for a range of sports
  • Opportunities to improve accessibility at the site
  • Potential expansion or enhancement of recreational activities at the site
  • Opportunities to improve linkages with the natural surrounds including creek line and trails
  • Current and emerging community needs.
