Background
Monaro Crescent / Padova Court Reserve Playground is a local level playground located adjacent Newton Village Shopping Centre and Newton Plaza, and approximately 100m south of Steve Woodcock Sports Centre.
Satellite view of Monaro Crescent / Padova Court Playground (red star) showing proximity to other facilities. In early 2021 Council asked the Community for suggestions on playground features to include in a redeveloped playground. The Community requested a basketball court, swings, more seating and better connections to the shopping centres.
A Draft Concept Plan was developed based on Community suggestions. The proposal includes retention (and refresh) of several items of existing play equipment and the shade structure to minimise the cost of the upgrade and extend the useful life of the existing assets.
What’s being proposed?
The Concept Plan has been designed to complement the shopping centre precinct which is soon to be redeveloped. It includes a half-court basketball court, upgraded playground elements, new plantings, new signage and a walkway to connect with the Newton Plaza shopping centre. It also includes a rock retaining wall around the playground, which will double as seating and incorporate climbing elements.
The colour of the half-court basketball will be selected to minimise heat outputs, and re-use of sustainable materials will be sourced where appropriate (rocks, timber logs etc.). The Concept Plan increases plantings at the Reserve, assisting in cooling and greening the space.
The reserve is currently known as Monaro Crescent Reserve, Monaro Crescent/Padova Court Reserve and Padova Court/ Monaro Crescent Reserve. Council is interested to know if the Community would support a new name for the reserve to help create a sense of place and ownership of the space, and reduce wordiness and confusion.
