Community Engagement Outcomes
During February and March 2022, Council consulted the Community on combining the King George Reserve and Church Reserve and changing the name to the Kaurna name 'Tuku Wirra'.
At their meeting on 19 April 2022, Council adopted the new name of Tuku Wirra'.
King George Reserve and Church Reserve in Magill are joined local reserves of approximately 9000m2 in total, which contain a hall for hire, trees, shrubs and open grass areas. The reserves are bound by houses on all sides and can be accessed by several local streets. King George Reserve is linked to the Magill Old Folks’ Home, which opened in 1917. The Reserve has been previously referred to as the Mulberry Court/Mann Court Reserve and Council named it the King George Hall Reserve in 1993.
What was proposed?
As part of its commitment to Reconciliation and respect to Kaurna people, Council decided to seek a Kaurna name for both reserves, combined. Staff sought a Kaurna name from Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi, an organisation that specialises in Kaurna language. Council is proposing the Kaurna name ‘Tuku Wirra’, which means little bushland, for the combined reserves.
