Background
Climate Change is happening here and now, with the potential to have a wide ranging and compounding impact on Campbelltown City Council and our Community.
Following the declaration of a Climate Emergency in 2019, Council established a Climate Solutions Advisory Committee (under Section 41 of the Local Government Act 1999) and adopted a Climate Solutions Strategy in 2021 to progress urgent action with respect to climate change.
The updated Strategy has now been reviewed to ensure it:
- Continues to align with our strategic objectives,
- Considers updated scientific understanding, and
- Continues to provide a framework for our response to current and future challenges presented by climate change.
What has changed in the Strategy?
- Our approach to adaptation, which, through an understanding of climate related risks, now involves proactive action to support the resilience of our assets, operations and Community.
- A commitment to Net Zero, involving reducing emissions as low as possible and avoiding new emissions by embedding sustainability into our decision-making and procurement.
- Principles to guide our Climate Solutions decision making and approach
To achieve the Vision in our Strategy, we have outlined the following goals:
Goal 1: Reduce Emissions
We will proactively reduce Council’s direct contribution to climate change; and we will empower our Community to do the same.
Goal 2: Prepare our City
We will take action to prepare for and adjust to the current and projected impacts of climate change.
Goal 3: Be Sustainable
We will embed long-lasting actions that have shared responsibility, with a balanced approach.
