Community Engagement Outcomes

Council considered feedback from this consultation at its meeting on 1 March 2022.

Council resolved the following at the meeting:

That Council:

1. receive the Community Engagement Outcomes Report for the Food Waste Solutions consultation

2. consider allocating $120,000 from the Climate Solutions Fund at the time of formulating the draft 2022/2023 Annual Business Plan and Budget for the implementation of a Green Organics / Food Waste trial, subject to a favourable outcome of the Business Case.

You can read the report by viewing the agenda (pages 61-108).

Council Staff will now work on the establishment of a Business Case to support Green Organics/Food Waste trials.

Thank you for your participation in this consultation and providing feedback that could be used to support next steps required to improve our Green Organics/Food Waste services.

Project Details

Did you know:

  • Each year in our Council area, over 30% of household waste is food waste, much of which is sent to landfill. This equates to over 3,000 tonnes of food waste per year just from our residents.
  • It costs 85% more to send food waste to landfill than recycling it in your Green Organics bin.
  • 30% of the world’s food is wasted and when not disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, generates methane which is a harmful greenhouse gas.
  • By putting food waste in your Council Green Organics Bin, you help to create mulch and compost for gardens and agriculture.
  • Evidence shows that placing your food waste in a green organics bin or composting can reduce your landfill (blue bin) volume by up to 50%.
  • Council is committed to continuous improvement of waste management as a key part of our climate change response.

What was proposed?

In late 2020 Council distributed a kitchen caddy kit, including a roll of compostable bags, to all residents. Council would like to know how you manage your food waste and whether or not the kitchen caddies have been useful. We would like to support you to divert more food waste from landfill where possible.
