Project Update Summary (November 2022)
During November 2021 Council asked for Community feedback on proposed upgrades to Hamilton Terrace. There was majority support for the proposed upgrades including:
A single lane, one way 40km/h roadway between the new driveway of The Rezz and Stradbroke Road which restricts traffic to an Easterly direction.
A dual lane slow point to the western end of Hamilton Terrace, which will include landscaping and have stormwater directed into the vegetation.
A wide and attractive pedestrian entry to Thorndon Park featuring a plaza with water feature, street furniture, irrigated turf and plantings.
The reconfiguration of footpaths and on street car parking, resulting in wider and more accessible footpaths and 37 demarcated parking spaces.
Additional plantings to create an avenue feel along the terrace, whilst providing more shade.
Sculptural elements which will link with the bird sculptures being constructed as part of the Thorndon Park Super Playground.
You can read the Community Engagement Outcomes report from page 25 in the Council Agenda here.
Following community engagement, Council endorsed Stage 1 works to commence in the 2021/2022 financial year. The now completed Stage 1 works included:
Replacement of a dual roadway from The Rezz entrance to the Thorndon Park carpark entrance with a single lane roadway allowing traffic to travel in an Easterly direction only.
Resealing the remainder of the dual lane roadway from The Rezz carpark to Gorge Road (West) with recycled asphalt
Installation of irrigation
footpath renewal
Installation of irrigated turf and new tree and shrub plantings
Safety bollards which prevent vehicles entering the lawn area
Stage 1 works are now complete.
New one-way point
New tree plantings and irrigated turf
New plantings and footpath
Background
Council commenced this project as part of its implementation of the adopted Thorndon Park Master Plan. An upgraded Hamilton Terrace supports the construction of the Super Playground finishing in late 2022, the recent redevelopment of The Rezz, and the establishment of a new petrol station and childcare centre. Council saw the opportunity to support these businesses, existing businesses as well as the Super Playground construction by upgrading Hamilton Terrace (west). Council developed a Draft Hamilton Terrace Concept Plan and asked the Community for feedback on the proposed upgrade.
Hamilton Terrace is a dual lane roadway connecting to Gorge Road at both its eastern and western ends. Traffic surveys show the majority of traffic flows west to east with average speeds well below the 60 km per hour speed limit, averaging 43 km per hour. The main entry to Thorndon Park is at the intersection of Hamilton Terrace and Stradbroke Road.
