Background

Council currently manages approximately 70 parks and reserves across the city. The majority of these parks permit dogs (either on or off leash) to be at the park.

In recent months, Council has received community feedback requesting greater access to dog-free public spaces. Feedback has highlighted a range of considerations, including:

  • The desire for inclusive spaces for all members of the community
  • Safety and comfort for young children and families
  • Potential conflict of use of recreational areas
  • Environmental and wildlife values in reserves.

Council has resolved to undertake community consultation before making any decision.

We are gathering feedback from residents, park users and the broader community about this matter.

What’s Being Proposed

We are gathering feedback from residents, park users and the broader community about this matter.

  • Nightingale Reserve, Magill: A reserve adjoining a creek corridor with surrounding community facilities.
  • Jenkins Avenue Reserve, Rostrevor: A small neighbourhood park adjacent to Rostrevor Tennis Club, featuring a playground and regularly used by families and nearby schools
  • Paradise Recreation Plaza: An active recreation space including a skate park and open area.

If designated as dog-free, dogs would not be permitted within these parks at any time.

Note: No decision has been made. Community feedback will inform Council’s consideration.
